Babies are at very high risk of contracting various infections and diseases as their body is still in a developing phase. Moreover, since infants can not communicate verbally, it may become extremely difficult to understand or identify if something is troubling the baby. One of the most common problems most babies face is gastrointestinal problems, which are usually easily handled by pediatric gastroenterologists. However, the major challenge lies in identifying the problem.

‍Here are a few signs of digestive problems in infants which you should look out for:

  1. Vomiting:

Though it is very common and normal for infants to vomit a small amount of milk after being fed, vomiting may also indicate some digestive problem. Especially if the vomit is forceful and violent or if it is greenish or brownish in colour, it is highly recommended to visit the doctor immediately.

  1. Hiccups:

Due to digestive problems, there might be excessive production of digestive acids which in turn may lead to continuous hiccups in the child. This is often accompanied by abdominal pain which the child may not be able to express verbally but may cry for the same reason. Continuous hiccups are another reason for you to visit your pediatric gastroenterologist.

  1. Difficulty in breathing:

The high acid content in the stomach may lead to blocking of the respiratory passage of the child. Symptoms like nasal congestion, distressed breathing etc. may occur because of digestive problems. These symptoms get worse at night or when the child is sleeping.‍

  1. Diarrhoea:

Another common symptom of a digestive problem is diarrhoea. There are various factors which can lead to constipation or diarrhoea in a childlike lack of fiber intake, stomach infection, certain medications etc. However, it is always wise to take your child to a doctor for gastroenterology tests if diarrhoea persists.

  1. Reflux:

‍Acid reflux is another symptom of some digestive problem. Factors like food allergies, problems in sphincter muscle etc. can lead to acid reflux. If the symptom persists, it is advisable to visit a pediatric gastroenterologist to look closely into the matter.  At Cloudnine Hospitals, we combine medical expertise with state-of-the-art facilities to provide you and your child with the best possible treatment and care.
